Art
For Wietske, artistic expression and creativity are important modes of reflection and spiritual practice. In her works, she examines and expresses complex ideas and experiences through symbolism. Her works are often inspired by nature, scripture, and her personal experiences. In many of her works, she creates an eclectic dreamscape of complex patterns and ornaments in which she places living figures, crossing boundaries between different perceptions of the material world and the worlds of subjectivity, spirituality, and reason. She is currently working on two projects.
Heavenly Dreams (2022, acrylics on canvas)
Birds | As a part of her collection of forty essays in which she reflects upon the lessons on faith, ethics, and the environment to be learned from forty different birds, she is currently in the process of painting the forty birds. With these paintings, she aims to deepen her own reflection on the lessons to be learned, as well as honor her teachers in a beautiful form.
Painting the Qur’an | In this project, Wietske engages in creative reflection upon the text of the Qur’an. Her intention is not to create literal depictions of scenes from the Qur’anic narrative, but rather to engage the Qur’anic chapters and verses creatively in an attempt to connect with them on a deeper level, focusing on various elements from the text, its rhythm, motifs, and telos. With this collection of works, she invites her audience to connect with the Qur’anic narrative through different eyes.
